What Comes First - Logo or Website?

I often hear the question – do I need to have a logo for you to design my website? My opinion is that the two should be designed in unison, along with your entire brand identity. However, if you have to choose, your logo should come first.

Here’s why.

Your Logo is the foundation of your brand identity. A seasoned designer will consider how it will work with all of your brand assets - including your website.

  • In order to design an effective logo, your designer will work with you to understand your brand, intentions, mission and ideal client. All of this will play a huge part in your website design as well.

  • Your website designer will want to be familiar with your logo so that he or she knows what they have to work with. The designer will also benefit from the mood/brand board prepared by your logo designer.

  • Once you have a logo that you love, you can prepare a “coming soon” page letting people know your site is being developed and how to get in touch with you.

  • “Logo first” allows you to start promoting your brand on social media or print collateral in advance of the website launch.

To sum it up, many of the same things you will need to know before preparing a website will be uncovered in the discovery work you will undertake in the logo design process. If you can swing it, work on them simultaneously, but if you can’t, the logo always comes first.
